The National Institute of Design (NID) is a group of autonomous public design institutes, the first of which was formed in Ahmedabad in 1961. The other NIDs are in Kurukshetra, Amaravati, Jorhat, and Bhopal. The NIDs operate independently under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research of the government's Ministry of Science and Technology recognizes the NIDs as scientific and industrial research organisations. Admission to
NIDs is through NID DAT examination.
