Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) : There are currently twenty-three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Patna, Bhubaneshwar, Ropar, Jodhpur, Gandhinagar, Indore, Mandi, Varanasi, Tirupati, Palakkad, Goa, Jammu, Dharwad, Dhanbad, and Bhilai to meet the growing demand for highly skilled technical manpower. All are controlled by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961, which declares them to be "institutions of national importance" and establishes their powers, tasks, governance framework, and other provisions.
IITs provide undergraduate programs in a variety of engineering and technology disciplines, as well as postgraduate and Ph.D. programs in engineering and science disciplines and multidisciplinary fields. They also conduct basic, applied, and sponsored research. IITs currently provide B.Tech., B.Arch., M.Sc., M.Design, M.Phil., M.Tech., MBA, and Ph.D. degrees. Entry to various courses at IITs is based on merit in entrance tests such as the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) for B.Tech courses, the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for M.Tech, and the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. Programs (JAM).
