The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore was founded in 1909. Higher education and advanced research in science and engineering have been the Institute's primary focus. The institute began operations in 1911 with two Departments and has steadily grown over the last nine decades to take the lead among the country's higher education institutions. The Institute is a postgraduate institution that provides high-quality education while also excelling in research and development in a variety of scientific, engineering, and technological areas. There are presently more than 40 Departments and Centers of Sciences, including Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Electrical and Mechanical Sciences, and Information Science and Services.
